Microsoft Remote Desktop - Good for one-off RDP sessions RoyalTSX - Great remote connection manager, I've used the Windows version for years so it immediately made my MBA feel like homeįortiClient - VPN is essentially instant-on, performs better than the Windows equivalent IMO I'm still exploring and discovering but these are the gems I have found so far: Oh and you asked about programs for daily use. Oh, and the MBA cost less than half, and runs circles around the Surface in terms of performance & battery.
I literally haven't opened my Surface Laptop since I got the MBA. I won't be moving my primary workstation to Mac anytime soon, but for grab-and-go, open it up and it is absolutely ready to rock, the M1 MBA is unbeatable. No exaggeration, Mac made a better Windows laptop than Microsoft. I also have Windows 10 & Windows 11 running in Parallels, which is pretty slick. The handful of things I can't emulate (vSphere client) I just RDP back to my desktop (using Royal TSX) and it's pretty darn seamless. SecureCRT picks up the serial interface no problem.

These are all cheap generic adapters I got over the years from Amazon, not specifically for Mac compatibility. I have used several different USB serial adapters (via a USB-C hub) without any issues. It is so, so much better for network warrior use.
But the fact is, the MBA is faster, lighter, there is no fan noise, no heat, it turns on instantly every time, and battery anxiety is a thing of the past. Previously I carried a Surface Laptop 3 13", which I really enjoyed as well. I am a lifelong, diehard Windows power user, but I picked up an M1 MacBook Air a few months back for my EDC work laptop and it's refreshingly capable.
